Doug Wallower Bio
Many people talk about recycling, but few actively recyle at the same level as
sculptor, Doug Wallower. His sculptures are made from stone, steel and iron
found in drained lakes and industrial scrap yards. Doug’s work proves that
something interesting and thought-provoking can be created from discarded and
abandoned materials.
Initially, his motivation for using recycled materials was economic. He was a
“starving artist” who was driven to create. With no money for materials he was
prolific and his talent developed. It turned out that the environment also
benefited from Doug’s resourcefulness and that commitment to recycle continues
to this day.
A native of Colorado, Doug was drawn to the Pacific Northwest to attend college.
He knew he wanted to be an artist as a child and has never waivered from the
pursuit of that goal. He has been working as a sculptor since graduating from
Evergreen State College in 1975. His early work, in the minimalist style,
combined stone and steel and now includes cast glass.
Doug and his wife are relocating to the
Santa Fe area from Portland, Oregon. The move is based on Doug’s desire to work
unencumbered so that he can reinvent himself. He considers himself to be an
extreme environmentalist which is reflected in his choice of materials for his
sculptures.
